Goods Wagons

BRBritish Rail or British Railways DB996730 is a 60ft Bogie Bolster / Rail Carrier and is one of 95 built for BRBritish Rail or British Railways by Cravens of Sheffield in 1950 to the former GWRGreat Western Railway GANE A design. The SVRSevern Valley Railway's 60841 is an example of the original GANE A first built in 1935 to Diagram J26. The 60ft length allowed standard length rails to be carried, with the wagon having a 40-ton capacity.

996730 was built to a modified GANE A design (Diagram J29) which was introduced in 1940 and incorporated two independent long lever brakes instead of the GWRGreat Western Railway's pre-War DC brakes. However it was never vacuum-fitted, which led to an early retirement.[2][3] During the BRBritish Rail or British Railways era, the Western Region commonly continued to use GWRGreat Western Railway-era Telegraph codes for Civil Engineers wagons rather than adopting the 'fish' codes used elsewhere[4].

Preservation

996730 arrived on the SVRSevern Valley Railway on 7 November 1990 from Willsden. It was one of a number of wagons that were originally intended for the Southall Steam Centre but which came to the SVRSevern Valley Railway instead during that year, owned by J.J. Smith.[2] It was immediately put to use by the PWPermanent Way department for carrying rails and sleepers.[5] The photograph shows the wagon carring rails in a engineering train at Bewdley in 2015.
