}}24068 is a Brake Composite Corridor (BCK). It has a welded underframe and
was outshopped in 1937 as one of 69 built to Diagram 169 between 1936 and 1940, with Rexine interior in art-deco style. It was renumbered 10078 in the 1943 renumbering of LNER locomotives and carriages. Following nationalisation it became E10078, E10078E and finally on passing to the Great Eastern section GE10078E. We believe it was overhauled at York in 1964, but may not have returned to traffic.
=24068 in Preservation===24068 was purchased for preservation from York by Dr F.G.A Noon, but not before seats, internal doors and many fittings had been removed. It became the SVR’s first Gresley Coach when it arrived on 9 September 1972; ownership passed to The LNER (SVR) Coach Fund in 1979. It was returned to traffic with replacement fittings from SVR stock but lack of funds prevented proper restoration. Between 1982 and withdrawal in 1992 it carried its BR number GE10078E . Its overhaul began in spring of 1997, initially with cosmetic work as the first vehicle through the SVR’s new paint shop. Following a number of photo charters with the North Norfolk Railway's B12, a full restoration began in October 1999. This was completed in 2000, with the coach now in LNER livery as 24068.
24068 was one of three coaches which in 2010 were gifted by the LNER (SVR) Coach Fund to the SVR Rolling Stock Trust (now the Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust Ltd), along with 43600 and 70759.
It was withdrawn awaiting its next overhaul , scheduled to commence in January 2018 when it was hoped to improve and re-upholster the seating. Unfortunately the roof was leaking, due it seems to the boards coming loose on the framework, which means the canvass will have to come off to allow the standard remedial work (see 43600). It was also hoped to replace a few non-teak panels before revarnishing the exterior. The carriage was returned to use in time for the 2018 Christmas services without all these repairs being carried out.
