80982 was built at Swindon in 1913 to Diagram CC7, Lot 767. It is the only surviving example<ref>Railway Heritage Register Wagon Survey</ref> of ten iron-bodied Tool Vans built for the GWR’s Signal Department, these being the last wrought iron vans built by the GWR. Illumination was provided by two skylights and two oil lamps.<ref>SVR Stock Book 9th Edition</ref>
In service, 80972 80982 was allocated to Reading Signal Dept.<ref>GWR813.org</ref> As a Departmental wagon, it carried the number DW 80982. After being decommissioned by BR(W), 80982 was rescued from Bristol, arriving on the SVR in May 1972. It has been fully restored and is now situated at [[Bewdley]] where it serves as the [[Wagon Department]]'s mess van. It is owned by [[The GWR 813 Preservation Fund]].
